Tips for living a fabulous life on a budget

Workspace Make-Over February 4, 2010

Anthropologie mugs – $6.00/each

Brocade desk accessories – $ 4.99-$7.99/each

Audrey Hepburn picture – $49.99

4″ pots – $1.99/each

Lamp – $19.99

I need a workspace make-over.  I spend so much time and money decorating my apartment, yet I spend the majority of my time at work.  I like the idea of an artist’s studio – a place that is both creative and functional.  The search has begun and here are my favorite  mugs, desk accessoriespots, lamp and picture so far.

10 Reasons I Love The OC July 31, 2009

When meeting someone new, the question “where are you from?” usually comes up at some point.  I always find it really interesting to watch the reaction of a new acquaintance when I tell them I am from Orange County.  Some times I can almost see the bad reality TV show images flickering across their minds.

I am heading home this weekend for my Dad’s birthday celebration.  I love going home and I love the OC. Don’t get me wrong, I love LA and I would probably be bored if I lived in OC.  But here are my favorite things about living behind the Orange curtain:

  1. My family and friends
  2. The dress code of jeans, a t-shirt and Rainbow sandals
  3. Great local breakfast places like Ted’s, Alta Coffee, and Coyote Grill
  4. Getting to mourn the relocation/remodel of Javier’s
  5. Getting to complain about cougars and LA wanna-be’s at the new Javier’s
  6. Window shopping in Laguna Beach
  7. Seeing people cycling, running, and enjoying the sunshine every weekend (similar to the feeling in Santa Monica)
  8. Big freeways with wide lanes
  9. Going out and ending up at the same bar as everyone you know
  10. Guys who surf

To be honest, the last couple weeks have been a little rough.  I am usually a glass half full kind of girl, but I feel like the last couple weeks have been an illustration of the maxim “when it rains it pours.”  Don’t worry, nothing truly earthshaking has occurred, just enough to increase the minutes on my cell phone bill with calls to family and close friends.  Here are my favorite $5 indulgences that always put a smile on my face:

Free – Until it is your turn to hostess

Book – Renew your library card

I started a book club about a year ago and  I look forward to it so much each month.  Staring a book club is a great way to spend time with your friends without spending a lot of money.  We usually meet every 6 weeks and pick the next month’s book during each meeting.  During book club, we usually have a meal of some kind but it is up to hostess.

I included some pics from our last meeting. We read A Year in Provence and Katie did an amazing spread with various cheeses, olives, wines, quiche, and roasted veggies.

My Budget Design Inspiration Has Moved May 28, 2009

My friend Char is the one who turned me on to budget design and DIY projects.  I did a post on some pics of her apartment last year.  This post is actually one of my most popular posts.

Recently, Char moved in with her fiance.  As everyone who has moved in with a new roommate or spouse knows, the ritual of the “joining of the stuff” is very involved and usually involves a few hurt feelings.  “What do you mean that you don’t like my futon – it’s practical?!?!”  It is even more challenging when you are saving for a wedding and need to make do with what you have.

But Char took on this daunting task and did a wonderful job joining their things in a beautiful streamlined way.  For example, her fiance is from Texas and had a large Texas flag in his apartment.  What does Char do?  Frame it and cluster it with a few of her favorite pictures.
