Forever 21 Wallet – $7.80

Many of this summer’s fashion trends have been inspired by the 70′s – long maxi dresses, global/tribal themes, wood accessories, and retro floral prints.

While I was not looking for a new wallet, I fell in love with this 70s inspired wallet over the weekend. Looking at it makes me smile and for $7.80 – I could not resist.

Forever 21 Warm Weather Scarf – $9.90

I ventured to the Bev Center this weekend to pick up a few gifts and ended up leaving with a few gifts for myself.  The good thing about shopping at places like H&M and Forever 21 is that you really can’t do that much damage to your bank account.

I love this scarf because it is soft and light. The color of is really vibrant and beautiful in real life.  I am planning to pair it with my fav white button down, leggings, and gladiators.

Tips On What To Wear When Seeing An Ex June 5, 2008

Okay, this post isn’t really about budgeting, but I think it is totally applicable to most women. If it doesn’t apply to you, then you are a bigger person than I am.

For some reason, my June calendar is filled with various functions with ex-boyfriends/ex-guys-I-have dated. I am not going to lie, prior to these functions, I definitely spend time obsessing about what I am going to wear. To clarify, it is not because I still like these boys. When I see them, I just want to exude a casual “yes, I was this beautiful when we dated and boy you are an idiot” vibe. When I feel beautiful, I am more confident and less likely to say awkward/inappropriate things. For example telling a recent ex- guy-I-dated “I am so glad I don’t have to run into you in Westwood any more”…awkward.

The key to pulling this look off is not look like you put a lot of thought into your outfit. Here are a couple tips that I have learned over the years.

  1. You must consider the weather. Do NOT wear a sun dress (even if you look adorable in it) when it is foggy outside.
  2. You must consider the function. High heel shoes that get stuck in the grass are not appropriate for an outdoor BBQ.
  3. Do not wear something that is not “your style.” If you are a jeans and t-shirt kinda gal, wear a super cute version of jeans and a t-shirt. Do not try to pull off a mini skirt. You will only feel uncomfortable and look like you are trying too hard.
  4. Emphasize the feature you like the most, but don’t go overboard. If you think you have great legs, wear high waisted shorts or a skirt and a more conservative top. Do not wear a booty shorts and a halter. Besides looking trashy – he will figure what you are up to :)
  5. Do not break the bank on your outfit. While you can totally get something new and saucy, going into credit card debt over an ex is not worth it. Case in point, Carrie’s shopping spree before attending Natasha’s Women of the Arts luncheon.

Budget Weekend Style Update May 30, 2008

H&M Shorts – $34.99

American Apparel T-shirt – $18.00

Necklaces – Flea Market $5.00, Gift from Grandma – Free

F21 Cocktail Ring – $4.99

I know it’s kinda late in the week for a style update from Memorial Day Weekend, but I thought I would give an update anyway.

I have finally overcome my fear of high waisted shorts. I thought this simple take on summer’s safari and high waist trends was perfect for a day of shopping and lunch with a girlfriend in Santa Monica. While I probably could have added more accessories, I like the simplicity of this outfit.

Personally, I think that women look most beautiful in simple outfits like jeans and a t-shirt. While I love fashion and accessories, some times it feels good to just get back to basics.

Was I in the sun too long or are jumpers kinda cute? May 20, 2008

Urban Outfitters Lux Floral Jumper – $68.00
American Apparel – $38.00

This weekend the Z, Ger, Deb, Mich and I went to the Swimming With Sharks party at the Standard downtown. Needless to say, the hipsters were out in droves – American Apparel, neon shorts, wayfarers, one-piece bathing suits and jumpers were everywhere. At one point a guy (who was clearly not from LA) asked me to tell him about the 80s party that was going on…LOL. I had to explain that this is hipster style and not a costume party.

Six hours in the sun and 4 mojitos later, I found myself thinking that jumpers are kinda cute. It normally takes me a couple seasons to embrace styles that I think are kinda “out there.” But I am really considering taking the plunge and getting a jumper. Maybe I will take it out for a test run to the beach or (more likely) in the privacy of my own apartment.

Cut-Off Jean Shorts? May 14, 2008

American Eagle Jean Shorts – $34.99

Every summer, I can never decide whether or not it is appropriate to wear cut-offs without the presence of a major body of water. They are totally cute at the beach, lake or even an outdoor concert. But what about to brunch or a warm night out?

After years of pondering, my answer is – it depends on what you pair them with. If your jean shorts are really tight or short – pair them with a lose fitting blouse. If your shorts are loose, wear them with a more fitted top. To take cut-offs from beachwear to a chic night out pair them with statement accessories like a scarf, big errands, or boots.

The most budget friendly cut-off shorts are found in your closet. Find an old pair of jeans and cut them to your length of choice and put them in the wash. American Eagle also has some really cute jean shorts for $34.99.

Even though the LA weather is cool right now, I am planning to rock my cut-offs this summer with my gladiators, medallion necklace, and lightweight orange blouse. You can definitely count on some pics of my outfit in a future a budget weekend style post.

Urban Outfitters Flight Pattern Silk Scarf – $28.00

Urban Outfitters Square Printed Scarf – $20.00

Urban Outfitters Crosshatch Shawl – $19.99

It seems like June Gloom has come early this year to So Cal. I can’t think of a better way fight the urge to curl up under a blanket than with a new budget accessory – the warm weather scarf. These scarves are made of lighter material than winter scarves which makes them perfect for gloomy spring days and warm summer nights.

The look for Spring/Summer 2008 is achieved by draping a long and wide scarf around your head and so it falls to your ideal length. Here are some of my favorite budget scarves from Urban Outfitters.

I have loved Rachel Bilson’s style ever since she made she debut as Summer Rogers in The O.C. One of my favorite things about her sense of style is her use of accessories. She makes great use of handbags, sunglasses, hats, and belts.

Orchid Hair Clip – $14.00

Okay, okay I know that florals are a cliche for spring. But warm weather combined with a breezy summer dress and a flower in my hair just makes me relax and feel like all is right with the world. The umbrella garnished cocktail that usually accompanies this outfit might have something to do with this euphoric feeling…but who’s counting?

My love for flower hair clips began in college. There’s a store in Santa Barbara called a Tropical Affair and they carry the cutest hand-made flower hair clips. These clips ranged from $30-$50 and were totally out of my college budget. I wanted one so much that one day, I decided to test out my hot glue skills and attempt to replicate one. The result was a sticky glitter mess and brunt fingers.

Now that I am older and much wiser, I simply did Google search and found this totally cute flower hair clip for only $14.00 – which is a much better price than the Tropical Affair clips and did not result in any injuries.
